TWO NICKELS
by Michael F. DeConzo
GENRE: Urban Fiction

I don’t often post book reviews on my blog, but occasionally a book comes along that leaves a lasting impression on me, such that I feel I should share it with other readers. Two Nickels by Michael F. DeConzo was an unexpected gem. Although I haven’t explored many urban fiction books before, I was immediately drawn to this particular novel that transported me to 1990s Manhattan—a setting and era I am intimately familiar with, and also, it’s written by a fellow Staten Islander. I’d also read good things about it.
I began reading the book in the airport lounge while traveling to Italy, having a feeling that it would make a perfect escape from the humdrum of flying. And boy, was I right. I wasn’t able to finish it during my trip, however, due to a jam-packed schedule that left me with little time for reading. But once back at home, I dove right back into it. There’s nothing like a good book to fight the post-vacation blues.
I asked Michael what had inspired him to write Two Nickels, and this was his response:
“By writing this novel, I wanted to explore the idea that, despite the occasional messes that we make of our lives, there is “magic” around us. Whether that magic is fate, destiny, coincidence, or divine intervention is open to interpretation. My MC Johnny Romano is not particularly enlightened—until he is, as a result of his very peculiar experience. But I also wanted to grapple with a question that I think about a lot: What does it take for us to forgive ourselves and move on?“
MY SHORT 5-STARS REVIEW:
(no spoilers here, so sit back and enjoy)
From the very beginning, Two Nickels had me hooked, completely engrossed in its highly entertaining and brilliantly written narrative. Michael F. DeConzo’s storytelling ability is so vivid that it transports readers into an authentic and immersive experience.
The story follows small-time actor Johnny Romano, as he desperately tries to make sense of the downturn his life has taken. From the suburbs of New Jersey, to Staten Island, to the bustling streets of Manhattan, DeConzo’s descriptive talent and metaphorical language takes us on an emotional journey, introducing us to a cast of wild and unique characters. From the charismatic Dinino to the compassionate funeral homeowner Joseph ‘scho schorry’ Auriemma, and Johnny Romano himself, characters and events come to life with such vividness that it feels like watching a gripping crime movie on the big screen.
One of the standout aspects of Two Nickels is the author’s keen attention to detail, especially in portraying the flavors of Italian culture, literature, language and the delectable world of food.
It is a book that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page. If you read it, be sure not to miss the laugh-out-loud acknowledgements page! I look forward to reading DeConzo’s new release, Welcome to the Arcade, next.

I’m thrilled to share that Michael F. DeConzo has recently released an exciting new book titled Welcome to the Arcade, which is the prequel to Two Nickels. I had the good fortune to attend the book signing in Staten Island two weeks ago where I met Michael and his lovely wife Pam in person, and absolutely had to take home a signed copy of the new book, which I can’t wait to delve into.
